In the last quarter of 2020, ICD Group, an international conglomerate operating in manufacturing, trading, and distribution of specialized commodity products announces the creation of ICD

Applied Technologies, a company that will leverage the group’s raw materials to achieve metal 3D printing applications.

The creation of the company has been made official yesterday. The new comer to the additive manufacturing market will honour ICD Group’s commitment toward key verticals adopting AM. ICD Applied Technologies will operate alongside the group’s business units:  ICD Alloys & Metals, ICD America, ICD Europe, and UMC Corporation.

With the goal to bring focus and solutions to the manufacture of niche net shape components, the UK-based newly created company has invested in a number of manufacturing technologies including a GE Additive Concept Laser M2 system.

ICD Applied Technologies ambitions to transform the use of powder metallurgy to

applications that usually are cast, wrought, or machined by developing novel and flexible methods for manufacturing complex components. With a collaboration with GE Additive, the company emphasizes the key role of laser technology in the achievement of these applications without jeopardizing the viability of conventional manufacturing technologies.

It’s great to see the ICD Applied Technologies team put additive and an M2 system at the heart of its technology strategy, but also acknowledges the complementary synergies with conventional manufacturing. We know that approach can work really well, so I’m looking forward to see how this experienced team scales and grows its business over the coming years”, Jan Siebert, General Manager for GE Additive’s laser business comments.

Other technologies that will support the new entrant’s development include complex canister manufacture using electroforming, advanced machining, and developments in powder metallurgy & associated technology.

John Schofield, Managing Director of ICD Applied Technologies, enthuses: “I am proud to be part of a new venture for the ICD Group. The establishment of ICD Applied Technologies demonstrates the dynamic forward-thinking nature of the ICD Group, expanding the business into complex and demanding product manufacturing sectors. The ICD family is a group of dedicated, successful, and supportive individuals that encompass and nurture an environment that breads entrepreneurial innovation. I feel great pride to be part of the ICD future journey and a part of a great company”.

ICD Applied Technologies might be a new entrant on the AM market but it is backed by its parent company’s century of experience in solutions that support the evolving needs of technology and metals, needs that inevitably require to take into account social, environmental and technical requirements of  today’s industry.
