“Affordable [expert medical segmentation] and 3D printing”. “Affordable” and “3D printing”: two words that are not often used together when it comes to medical 3D printing but axial3D did. The medical 3D printing company that recently secured $3M for US Expansion is exploring new horizons. This time, in collaboration with MedTech3D, a South-Africa based medical tech company.

Both companies plan to improve patient care and reduce theatre costs through 3D Printing. In a recent study, Gartner predicts that 25% of surgeons will use a 3D printed model in planning for surgery by 2021. We are not yet there but this partnership ambitions to accelerate this prediction in South Africa.

Dipika Maharaj, MD at MedTech3D said “3D printing is set to be the next revolution in healthcare. Medtech3D aims to ensure that the South African healthcare system is a part of this transformation in medicine, by providing premium medical 3D printing at affordable rates and within our local hospitals. We’re delighted that Axial3D is assisting us to do this by bringing its internationally acclaimed segmentation software to South Africa.”

How exactly Axial3D’s software will be utilized? Unfortunately, we do not have yet the answer but that’s something we are curious to discover when we know that the potential of the technology has already been acknowledged by both patients and surgeons, but its expensive cost has also been very  underlined.
