Pinarello, an Italy-based bicycle company makes use of metal 3D Printing to create a design for Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas, Tour de France cyclists. Both cyclists rode with their bike during the opening time trial stage in Dusseldorf.
The company revealed to BikeRadar, they chose “titanium production [an expensive raw material] to reduce cost and lead times versus CNC machining or carbon moulding.”
The 3D printed cockpits were customized for each rider by using computational fluid dynamics, and the finite element analysis. A simulation software was used to custom-design the 3D printed handlebars.
As for the printing process, makers used a “bed technology”, whse rendering can be seen on the components.
And the winner is…
By winning the Dusseldorf time trial, Geraint Thomas is the first yellow jersey of the Tour.
As for Chris Froome, he now leads the racing which is currently at stage 15 before the final on Sunday July 23rd.
