Jeol Ltd., a developer of metrology, scientific, medical and other industrial equipment headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, has released its JAM-5200EBM, an Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-EB) metal Additive Manufacturing machine.

The new machine would be based on the manufacturer’s electron microscope and electron beam lithography system for semiconductor manufacturing. This technology enables an automatic adjustment of the electron beam’s focus and distortion, not to mention that remote monitoring system also allows systems to be monitored 24/7.

According to Jeol, thanks to the long life cathode – a part that generates electrons -, and helium-free, operators can easily achieve cost reduction and mass production of parts of high quality and reproducibility.

Jeol ensures that the cathode lasts over 1,500 hours and can greatly reduce downtime for cathode replacement and improve productivity.

Furthermore, since no helium gas is needed to prevent the scattering of powder, the company’s ‘e-Shield’ powder dispersal prevention system is utilized to avoid the scattering phenomenon.

“Thanks to the helium-free environment, not only can parts be manufactured in a clean space at a low cost but the surface of the cathode is also less susceptible to damage, allowing the electron beam to remain stable. As a result, the manufacturing quality can be maintained until the end of the cathode’s lifetime”, the company states.

The machine is said to achieve a high level of quality for the manufacturing of parts in the aerospace, industrial power, and medical industries.
