The Netherlands aims at becoming one of the leaders in construction 3D Printing. Indeed, in addition of the 5 houses to be 3D Printed in the region, the city already achieves a range of significant projects in architecture and construction. Today, the city announces the location of the first industrial 3D concrete printing facility in Europe.

This milestone shows how much experts of the field believe in a fantastic future for concrete 3D Printing. Weber Beamix and BAM Infra will experiment the technology there and further develop it.
Bas Huysmans, Managing Director of Weber Beamix, explains what led to this partnership: “In the mid-nineties, we already started printing concrete, but then there was no market for it, so when twenty years later someone from Eindhoven University of Technology knocked on the door and wanted to start a project to print concrete, we were immediately enthusiastic.” This person is Theo Salet, professor of the TU/e that is studying advancements and new results in this field: “Four years ago I started a study into 3D printing of concrete. I didn’t want to do that alone, so I started looking for partners.”

Now that the partners (Saint-Gobain Weber Beamix, BAM Infra, Bekaert, Witteveen+Bos, Eindhoven University of Technology and Van Wijnen) are involved, they have to be aware of the fact that there is a lot to do. “The speed of printing is still far too slow, it should be ten times faster. There is also much to gain in the materials. We can think of new types of concrete, for example in different colours, different reinforcement or lightweight variants”, said Salet.
