Gannon University’s MakerSpace in Erie, Pennsylvania, has joined NFI Empire’s Project REBORN #001 as a technology and fabrication partner. Its team uses 3D printing and design tools to produce custom trim and badging for a rebuilt 1979 Chevrolet K30 crew cab, including parts that no longer exist. The truck will be auctioned to benefit The Brett Boyer Foundation.
The project is a one-of-one Duramax dually: a 1979 Chevrolet K30 crew cab rebuilt on a contemporary GMC Sierra 3500 frame, with a Duramax diesel drivetrain and updated suspension, while keeping its classic square-body exterior.
The MakerSpace’s role addresses a familiar problem in classic vehicle builds. Some of the trim and badging the truck needs can no longer be bought, and some of it never existed in the first place. Using 3D printing and design tools, the team is creating these custom parts for the build.

Nick Devine, Operations Manager of the Gannon MakerSpace, described the project as “a great example of what can happen when creativity, technology and hands-on problem solving come together.”
The MakerSpace is located at the Center for Manufacturing and Technology in downtown Erie. It offers 3D printing, metal fabrication, woodworking and electronics assembly, and serves students, small businesses and community partners.
Once complete, the truck will go to auction at The Red Bird Games in Brentwood, Tennessee. The Nashville-based nonprofit was founded in 2017 by Ellen and Bo Boyer in memory of their daughter, Sadie Brett Boyer. It raises awareness of congenital heart disease (CHD), funds research, supports families and providers, and celebrates the Down syndrome community.
The release does not specify which 3D printers, materials or software the team uses, nor how many parts are involved.
