The last time we heard from online manufacturing platform 3D Hubs, the company announced its acquisition by the giant Protolabs. In the meantime, 3D Hubs has quietly rebranded as Hubs, an on-demand manufacturing and rapid prototyping service.

During the recent years, when a company was founded, to highlight the fact that it provides 3D printing/ AM as part of its services, we used to see 3D, 3D printing, AM or the whole term Additive Manufacturing mentioned in its name. Sometimes, this correlation can still be observed today.

Having an abbreviation of 3D printing or AM in a company’s name makes sense when the main focus of the company is dedicated to these technologies. With over 6 million parts delivered to 35,000+ companies, the Protolabs company gathers today more than 4200 machines and all of them are not 3D printers. Its capabilities include 3D Printing Service, CNC Machining Service, CNC Milling, CNC Turning, CNC Surface Finishing, CNC Part Marking, Injection Molding Service, Sheet Metal Fabrication Services as well as Rapid Prototyping Service.

Simply put, a hub is “the central or main part of something, where there is most activity”. This means that, the new Protolabs company wants to embody the manufacturing hub of the industry, capable to serve any key vertical industry using the most appropriate manufacturing technology; and the fact that its new name – Hubs – has kept its plural form clearly demonstrates that.
