Sintratec Kits enabled UK’s researchers to 3D print drugs

Sintratec’s SLS 3D printer has enabled a research group from the United Kingdom to 3D print drugs. Researchers have already demonstrated that drugs can be manufactured using 3D printing technology.

In an interview, speaking about Aprecia’s 3D printing technology, Cycle Pharmaceuticals’ CEO, Antonio Benedetti, explained that, to 3D print drugs, this technology has the ability to include high doses of drugs in one single tablet. Leroy Cronin’s idea goes beyond this one. According to the researcher, it will soon be possible to 3D print drugs at home.

So, now, we know that it is possible to 3D print drugs. However, the question is:  what 3D printing technology is capable of such an innovation? A few of them is available on the market and Sintratec’s 3D printer is part of them.

How FabRx uses Sintratec’s SLS 3D printer…

FabRx is a research group from the University College London UCL that exploits 3D printing technology to manufacture Printlets TM, 3D printed tablets.

The spin-out company aims to make medicines more attractive to both young and elderly in order to facilitate compliance of treatments.

By using the Kits of the Switzerland 3D printer manufacturer, the researchers were able to better process temperature sensitive materials. In other terms, the 3D printer enables to adjust settings such as laser speed and material temperature. The technology requires the use of powdered material to form complex 3D objects; therefore, drugs can be successfully 3D printed in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors and textures.
