Digital Metal’s binder jetting technology increasingly attracts new markets
Following a first introduction on the US market, Digital Metal now seduced the UK market with its binder-jetting technology. From July/August 2018, the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry will start achieving new experiences with the manufacturer’s metal 3D printer. For the first time, the 3D printer of the Swedish company will be used on the UK market and this industry will discover and appreciate its capabilities on small, highly complex and high precision parts.
For those who do not know, the MTC is part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and supported by Innovate UK. The independent Research and Technology Organisation provides its expertise across a comprehensive range of AM processes, from initial design to final delivery of pre-production parts. By integrating a wide range of equipment, their aim is to be able to support companies of any size in the adoption of 3D printing to develop their business.
Member companies and other organisations could discover Digital Metal impressive equipment through a series of tests.

“The Digital Metal binder jetting technology falls into the category of ‘bind-and-sinter AM’, where a multi-stage process chain incorporating sintering is required to achieve full density.” says Dr David Brackett, AM Technology Manager at the NCAM. “It’s a very fast technology that can create complicated and highly detailed designs, and there is potential for wider material choice than with AM processes that use melting. We are delighted to be able to offer this to the companies we work with.”
The centre also conducts advanced research in Metal Injection Moulding (MIM) which requires a similar set of post-processing steps to metal binder jetting. Its personnel is currently performing training on the equipment to make sure they will be ready to use it safely and efficiently.
