A 3D printed home created for underserved communities

The story is happening in Austin. New Story, a non-profit organization created a 3D printed home for the developing world with the help of ICON, a construction technology company that exploit 3D printing to build.

The organization aims to implement a world where people will not live in survival mode. “We feel it’s our responsibility to challenge traditional methods and work toward ending homelessness. Linear methods will never reach the billion+ people who need safe homes,” said Brett Hagler, CEO of New Story.

The 3D printed home, a collaboration that raises faith in humanity

The idea of ICON is to make the home serve as a representation of sustainability, affordability, and customizability. The construction company achieves its goal by using a 3D printer called the Vulcan.

The device can work under difficult conditions such as the ones in Haiti and rural El Salvador where power can be unpredictable, potable water is not a guarantee and technical assistance is sparse.

It should be noted that there is a clear lack of houses in these regions, and we do not inform you that the construction of a house requires a lot of financial resources. However, by using the capacities of this printer, the company wanted to address this issue instead of building with profit motivation.

Jason Ballard, co-founder of ICON explained the advantages of leveraging 3D Printing technology: “With 3D printing, you not only have a continuous thermal envelope, high thermal mass, and near zero-waste, but you also have speed, a much broader design palette, next-level resiliency, and the possibility of a quantum leap in affordability. This isn’t 10% better, it’s 10 times better.

Last, other organizations took part in ICON and New Story’s project. Pump Studios, Yaskawa Electric, Alchemy Builders, TreeHouse, Andrew Logan Architecture, Linestar Automation and The University of Texas helped to develop the Vulcan printer.
