US Military budget lays emphasis on 3D Printing technology

For 2018, the military budget to be approved by Washington is $ 639.1 billion and includes significant support for the use of additive manufacturing. In this budget, the budget for 3D printing and technological innovation would be $ 13.2 billion.

These funds will be dedicated to military activities of the Department of Defense, military construction and personnel. The interest in 3D printing is very significant because the Department of Defense intends to revolutionize the industrial supply chain. The subcommittee bill on emerging threats and capacities confirms this. According to this project, 3D printing will provide in addition “new technological capabilities.”

At strategic levels, the Defense will make use of 3D printers. Obsolete parts could be produced through applications and expectations from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) will be met.

Some challenges including certification are highlighted by the NDAA, hence the establishment of standards and certifications to ensure the use of quality 3D printed parts.

To tackle this issue, the subcommittee precises that, this capability, both to repair out-of-date equipment and to speed repair in order to meet urgent operational requirements.” “substantial room remains across the force to add more capacity for

New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik gave her feelings about the 3D printing: “in Congress, I was pleased to recently work on a legislative initiative that will help 3D printing firms like Norsk, and I will continue my work to further develop a workforce that can meet the needs of our high-tech employers…Our district continues to grow as a home to many companies that work with cutting edge technology, and I was pleased to include this language that will benefit the Department of Defense and these manufacturers.”
